The Cure - A Day With Sis

Admittedly there was shoe shopping involved; boot shopping to be more precise. But the real draw? A day hanging out with my polar opposite - my sister. We are completely different animals, she and I. Yet the same in ways that only sisters can be. We laugh at the same things (most often at each other) and our laugh is almost exact; no lady-like snickering from us. We laugh hard and loud and in such a way that make the 'ladies who lunch' snort in disapproval. Hey, we couldn't afford Charm School. Our charm is genetic - and certainly an acquired taste.

I expected to spend the day tending to my injured sister, she having had knee surgery just the day before. My 'tending' amounted to me reminding her constantly to use her crutches. She was up and ready to go. She hobbled all the way and ultimately eschewed her crutches; we would probably lose them anyway. Lunching and shopping and laughing out loud. That's the path to the other side of heart break.

And we got a surprise early home coming from her husband. A happy surprise. And for me a rare glimpse into a real relationship, a healthy marriage of 32 years (or was it 31? There was some kind of squabble over that). Watching them, being in the midst of them - something akin to hope began to surface. And then he said something. Something that, to me, was profound. He said, "I love her, she is my best friend. She has forgiven me for things that she didn't have to fogive me for. But she did." Is that the way it works then? 32 years together boils down to forgiveness and the ultimate realization that the other person and your love for them is more dear to you than your pride and your ego?

Ahhh, well, here's to hope then. And loud laughter. And epiphanies. Thanks for a wonderful day guys!
